 Did you know your heart actually sends more information to the brain than the brain sends to the heart?


Your heart has its own “brain”—a network of neurons and communication pathways that influence emotions, decision-making, and even intuition. Through nerves, hormones, pressure waves, and an electromagnetic field, the heart communicates continuously with the brain.

 Instead of beating at a perfectly steady pace like a metronome, a healthy heart rhythm constantly speeds up and slows down.  Heart rate variability (HRV) is the natural variation in time between heartbeats.

Heart Rate Variability

Various factors affect the pace of our beating heart. The act of breathing alone varies our heart rate whereas an inhalation increases heart rate and exhalation decreases heart rate. Variations in our heart rhythms also vary in large part due to the constant interplay between our heart and our autonomic nervous system (ANS).   It has been highly documented that our mental and emotional state has a direct impact on the functioning of our ANS such that emotions like anger and fear activate the sympathetic (fight or flight) part of our nervous system which increases heart rate compared to breathwork and meditative practices which activate our parasympathetic branch of our ANS, thus decreasing heart rate. 

Why it Matters...

 Analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) data provides us with a "window" into the current state of our ANS and our capacity to self-regulate in new and stressful situations.   This variability is a powerful indicator of health and resilience.

  • High HRV = adaptability, strong self-regulation, resilience.
  • Low HRV = stress overload, aging, or health challenges.
     

"Over the years, the HeartMath Institute has conducted many studies that have utilized many different physiological measures such as EEG (brain waves), SCL (skin conductance), ECG (heart), BP (blood pressure) and hormone levels, etc. Consistently, however, it was heart rate variability, or heart rhythms that stood out as the most dynamic and reflective indicator of one's emotional states and autonomic nervous system dynamics."

Coherence happens when your heart, brain, and nervous system work in harmony. It feels like balance, flow, and ease.  HeartMath research has clearly shown that stressful or depleting emotions such as frustration, fear and overwhelm lead to increased disorder in the higher-level brain centers which is reflected in heart rhythms that are incoherent resulting in decreased functioning of virtually all bodily systems.
